Licence and documents to ride a motorcycle in Peru

If you are planning to rent a motorcycle in Peru, here is everything you need to know about driving licences, mandatory documents and the requirements to ride legally in the country.

Can I ride a motorcycle in Peru with my foreign licence?

Yes, as long as your licence is valid and authorises you to ride motorcycles. Foreign driving licences in good standing can be used in Peru for a maximum of 6 months from the date of entry into the country. If you are a tourist, always carry with you:

Important: a licence that only permits you to drive cars does not necessarily authorise you to ride a motorcycle. Check that your category includes motorcycles before renting.

What if I have been in Peru for more than 6 months?

Your foreign licence is no longer valid for driving. You must apply for a licence exchange through the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) to obtain a Peruvian brevete equivalent to your home-country category.

Do I need an international driving licence?

It is not a universal requirement for all travellers. If you hold a valid foreign licence, we recommend always carrying your original licence together with your passport. An international driving permit can be a useful supplementary document, but it does not replace your original licence.

What documents should I carry when riding a motorcycle?

When riding in Peru you must have the relevant documentation for both the rider and the vehicle.
